The Johns Hopkins University Center for Alternative Animal Examination ( CAAT ) has been working with scientists since 1981 to find new methods to replace the use of laboratory animals in experiments, reduce the number of animals tested, and refine the tests needed to relieve pain and distress. CAAT is an academic, science-based center affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
CAAT promotes human science by supporting the creation, development, validation, and use of animal alternatives in research, product safety testing, and education. This is not an activist group; however, he seeks to make changes by working with industry, government, and academia scientists to find new ways to replace animals with non-animal methods, reduce the number of animals needed, or improve methods to make them less painful or stressful animals involved.
CAAT also operates Altweb, a global clearinghouse for information on alternatives to animal testing, and publishes a general animal news blog, A Boundless Ethic.
