A coffee enema is an enema-related procedure injecting coffee through the anus to clean the rectum and colon. There is no medical scientific evidence to support positive health claims for coffee enemas. This process can cause sepsis, severe electrolyte imbalance, colitis, proctocolitis, internal combustion, rectal perforation, and even brain abscess or heart failure.

Histori
While the idea of âârectal cleansing dates back to Ancient Egypt, the idea of ââcoffee as a substance related to the enema is not new. It was conceived in 1917, and appeared in the Merck Manual until 1972.
In 1920, German scientists investigated the effects of caffeine on the bile ducts and small intestine. Max Gerson suggests that coffee enema has a positive effect on the gastro-intestinal tract. Gerson says that coffee enemas have a positive detoxifying effect that contributes to the recovery of their patients' health. He claims that unlike the saline enema, the coffee in the enema travels through the small intestine muscle, and to the liver. This, he says, stimulates the autonomic nervous system in the same way as caffeine when taken orally and activates the release of bile in the liver, cleansing more gastro-intestinal tract and removing more toxins than normal enemas. He told his patients often that "coffee enema is not given for bowel function but for liver stimulation."
Coffee enema appeared in the Royal Army Medical Corps manual in 1944 as a stimulating enema for the treatment of shock and poisoning, mixed with brandy.
The practice of colon cleansing had a resurgence in the 1990s, and today, coffee enemas are used as alternative cancer treatments.

Effects and hazards
Some advocates of alternative medicine have claimed that coffee enemas have a rapid detoxifying effect with "detoxification" of tumor metabolism products. There is no medical scientific evidence to support the detoxification or anti-cancer effects of coffee enemas.
Coffee enemas can cause serious side effects (some common for other types of enemas), including infections, sepsis, severe electrolyte imbalance, colitis, proctocolitis, salmonella, brain abscess, and heart failure. If coffee is put too fast or too hot, it can cause internal or rectal perforation.
When administered as often as every two hours, coffee enemas have been shown to be connected to two cases of death as a result of severe electrolyte imbalance, hyponatremia, dehydration and pleural and pericardial effusion. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided that study participants should be warned about the risk of death from coffee enemas in studies that use them.
