Surgical lubricants , or medical lubricants , are substances used by healthcare providers to provide lubrication and reduce discomfort to patients during certain medical and surgical procedures such as vaginal or rectal examination. Some examples of lubricants that are compatible with surgery are:
- Surgilube is a surgical lubricant made from a water-soluble natural sap which also contains chlorhexidine gluconate antiseptic.
- K-Y Jelly was originally used as a surgical lubricant before it became popular as a personal lubricant.
- Lignocaine gel containing local anesthetic lignocaine is a prime example of non-irritating substance used as a surgical lubricant
- Drug distance oil is an original vegetable-based surgical lubricant.
