Histori

The SCR-536 is often considered the first two-way handheld, standalone radio, "handie talkie". It was developed in 1940 by a team led by Don Mitchell, chief engineer for Galvin Manufacturing (now Motorola) and was the first true handheld unit to be used widely. In July 1941, mass production. In November 1942, SCR-536 received coverage in QST amateur radio magazine. It appears on its cover as well as in Signal Corps ads, and is displayed as part of the article on the Corps of Signals. "Smallest Field Unit of the Signal Corps" where photo captions are read; "Not much bigger or heavier than a conventional handset". It was brought in between the first wave to hit Omaha Beach in Normandy in June 1944 (and in Italy, Sicily and North Africa before that). Each rifle company from the 29th US Infantry Division has six; one for each of the three platoon rifles, two for the weapon platoon, and another for the CO company. Germany was very impressed by SCR-536 and SCR-300 after capturing several units in Sicily. By the end of the war, 130,000 units had been manufactured by Motorola. They are also produced by other companies.

Currently, SCR-536 is often restored and operated by ancient amateur radio enthusiasts and military radio collectors.

Specifications

SCR-536, which combines five vacuum tubes in a waterproof box, does not have a separate power switch. Instead the radio is turned on when the antenna is pulled out, and off when pulled. The SCR-536 weighed 5 pounds with batteries and  £ 3.85 without (2.3 and 1.75 kg). The unit is operated in AM sound mode between the 3.5 and 6.0 MHz frequency ranges. SCR-536 has a RF power output of 360 miliwatt. Unit range varies with terrain; from a few hundred feet, about a mile above the ground, and 3 miles above the water. Short range is taken into account by short antenna: on transmission it shows low radiation resistance, so the pair to free space with low efficiency. The same applies to reception, with an alternative explanation: the shorter the receiving antenna, the less energy it can intercept ("collect"), and therefore give it to the receiver.

Under the Army Nomenclature System, the BC-611 transceiver is the core component of the SCR-536 Signal Correction Radio set. The Corps Signal technical guidance number is TM 11-235.
