The The Gays and Lesbians Pro-Life Alliance ( PLAGAL ) is a United States-based interest group that opposes elective abortions that are endorsed and supports alternatives to abortion.

The group was founded by Tom Sena in 1990 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Washington D.C. under the name "Gays Against Abortion". The name was changed to "Gay and Lesbian Life Alliance" in early 1991. Despite the two names, the group included all LGBT people, as well as direct allies. The first president was Philip Arcidi, who was elected in 1994.

Position

PLAGAL has shown several studies showing the relationship between abortion and breast cancer that has generally been rejected by the medical community. They have also taken the position that even if a woman is infected with HIV she should not abort the fetus because there is a way to prevent the transmission of the virus from the mother. They support the expansion of access to antiretroviral drugs for all people in need of such treatment, including pregnant women and their fetuses. In March 2005, the PLAGAL came out to support a law introduced by Maine state legislator Brian Duprey, who assumed that science would find a significant genetic component to homosexuality would make it illegal for a woman to selectively abort a fetus based on prediction of orientation sexual.

Reactions from the gay community

Because religious rights are considered to dominate pro-life movements, LGBT pro-voters question why LGBT individuals want to adapt to social movements traditionally opposed to not only legalized abortions, but often LGBT rights.

LGBT pro-lifers cons that their beliefs about abortion stem from beliefs about nonviolence, human rights, and human rights interrelations. Although some members of the PLAGAL are on the contrary conservative, they reach across the political spectrum. President of PLAGAL Cecilia Brown, for example, is a member of the Green Party. Another national officer, Jackie Malone, is outspoken about the rights of people with disabilities.

In early 1994, Chuck Volz, co-founder of the DEFERDAM branch, has started a row in local gay media when he condemned sponsors of AIDS travel in Philadelphia to divert "vital funds" to help with abortion. HIV positive children.

Most of the debates within the gay and lesbian community remain peaceful, if not always civil. However, in 1995 the PLAGAL applied for participation in Boston's annual Pride parade and was rejected. PLAGAL sets up a table along the parade route, where members share lectors. During the parade, the table was surrounded by angry people who tore the PLAGAL leaflet, â € <â €

In 2000 the Millennium of March for Equality, major gay rights groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and Human Rights Campaign support pro-choice public policy, despite protests from the PLAGAL.

Reaction from pro-life community

The reaction of the pro-life community is divided. Some pro-life supporters see their position as part of a more secular human rights position and send a support letter to the PLAGAL. Some of these individuals and organizations are affiliated with their opposition to abortion as part of a consistent ethics of life. Others see the fight against abortion in more pragmatic terms and welcome PLAGAL support, regardless of their position on other issues.

Other pro-life supporters who see their position as part of a wider conservative religious movement, oppose the entry of LGBT organizations in pro-life events. The American Catholic University in Washington, D.C., rejected a request to allow the PLAGAL to sponsor a pro-life conference in January 2009, citing group support for same-sex marriage and condoning homosexual sexual activity.
