History

The current GEA AG ancestor is Metallgesellschaft AG (MG), established as a metal trading company in 1881 in Germany. Between 1881 and 1914, MG was represented on all continents, and invested in mines and metallurgical plants. Due to World War I, he lost most of his foreign investment and started a chemical trade. In 1920, Gesellschaft fÃÆ'¼r Entstaubungsanlagen (GEA) was founded by Otto Happel, to manufacture de-dusting equipment. Due to World War II, MG and GEA production facilities suffered extensive damage. Production resumes with about 70 employees in a small, undamaged building a few weeks after the end of the war. At that time, many business transactions - including salaries - were barter transactions. While reconstruction work continued in the following years, the company was once again hit hard. The day after Christmas in 1948, GEA founder Otto Happel died. His widow, Elisabeth Happel just eleven months earlier, took over the management of the company. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, power plant reconstruction helped GEA get back on track.

After the reconstruction, various innovations ensure the future of the company. In 1989, GEA became public and the era of expansion and globalization began. 1991-1995 GEA executed several acquisitions including Grasso, Niro, Westfalia Separator, and Tuchenhagen. MG also made a key decision with the acquisition of Dynamit Nobel AG, which resulted in entering the chemical industry.

The oil price shocks of 1990 caused a loss of oil business in the US, which pushed MG into crisis. MG responds with a fundamental rearrangement that marks the transition to innovative focus group technologies. Restructuring requires divestment of around 300 group companies and establishes a focus on chemicals and techniques.

In 1999, Metallgesellschaft acquired GEA AG and in 2000 it was renamed to mg ag technology. In 2003, the company undertook another strategic reorganization to specialize in special purpose machines focusing on process engineering, component and mill engineering.

2005 brought another significant change in the sales of Dynamit Nobel Plastics business unit and renamed the company to GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft. Reorganization does not stop there. In 2015, the "OneGEA" project was introduced, implementing a new integrated group structure with two main business areas as "Tools" and "Solutions" as well as uniform state organizations. The technology portfolio is expanded with the acquisition of CMT, Comas and Hilge.

To date, GEA has successfully executed the acquisition of 66 technologies and brands during its 135-year history. The full list is available on the GEA website.

Environmental Policy

The main objectives of the GEA environment focus on energy saving, waste and emission reduction solutions, which recognize the importance of sustainable economic and development. Environmental parameters to be monitored are as follows: emissions, energy consumption, handling of hazardous goods, water pollutants, waste, noise, wastewater/water consumption.

GEA Speaking Technology Publications showcase corporate relationships with megatrends, and how GEA aims to address challenges such as population growth, increased urbanization resulting in inadequate food, energy or pharmaceutical supplies, and ever-expanding climate change.

The Carbon Disclosure Project is a non-profit independent organization representing over 700 institutional investors. Annually collect information and publish greenhouse gas emissions from listed large companies and their strategies to combat climate change. GEA has taken part in surveys conducted within the framework of the Carbon Disclosure Project. In this survey, GEA also provides information on the opportunities and risks associated with climate change, as well as actions taken in the field of climate protection. By 2015, GEA was awarded the "Best Improver Germany 2015" award by the CDP for how to report on measures taken in the field of climate protection.

GEA is a member of the "Blue Competence" alliance, an initiative of the German Engineering Association (VDMA). The initiative members have promised to develop and/or promote sustainable engineering solutions in harmony with economic, ecological and social needs. It counts nearly 400 members of the alliance.

Social Responsibility

The company has prevailing corporate policies in terms of quality, health, safety & amp; environment to ensure the general welfare of its employees. To implement this policy, several organizational units have installed a certified management system in accordance with ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and/or ISO 50001.

GEA uses the so-called Integrity System, in which employees and external third parties are given the possibility to directly report compliance issues or violations of the general principles of corporate social responsibility (Code of Conduct), adopted in 2007 along with its European Council of Work. This system allows anonymous reporting when allowed in the country in question. It covers only the category of reporting that covers major risks for the company, its employees and all other stakeholders. Likewise, GEA welcomes the principle of the UN Global Compact initiative.

In 2015, GEA won the "Fair Company" award for responsible and transparent interaction with novice students and employees.

Diversity

GEA has a policy of official diversity along with on-site diversity strategies, which manifest in a mix of steps designed to promote diversity. One of the goals of GEA is to attract more women while including a higher number of talented female employees, so the proportion of women today is ca. 18% of the workforce. In terms of the international composition of its workforce, GEA employs over 70% of different nationalities.

GEA introduced local initiatives to promote projects involving children and youth, allowing children to experience the engineering world in the early stages of their lives. For example, in one of GEA's locations in Oelde, "Stobertage" has opened its doors for young children at the pre-school level to learn about tools and machines.
