Terpineol is a monoterpene alcohol that has been isolated from various sources such as eucalyptus oil, pine oil, and petitgrain oil. There are four isomers, alpha -, beta ââi> -, gamma -terpineol, and 4-ol-terpinen. beta ââi> - and gamma -terpineol is only different from the location of the double bond. Terpineol is usually a mixture of these isomers with alpha -terpineol as the main constituent.
Terpineol has a pleasant odor similar to lilac and is a common ingredient in perfumes, cosmetics, and flavors. -Terpineol is one of the two most abundant aroma of lapsang souchong tea; ? -pherpineol derived from pine smoke used to dry tea. () -? - Terpineol is a chemical constituent of skullcap.

Synthesis
Although naturally occurring, terpineol is generally made up of more available alpha-pinenes.
In one study, alternate routes ranging from d-limonene were demonstrated:
Limonene is reacted with trifluoroacetic acid in the addition of Markovnikov to a trifluoroacetate intermediate, which is easily hydrolysed with sodium hydroxide to be? -terpineol with selectivity of 76%. Side products are? -terpineol in a mixture of cis -omer, trans -omer, and 4-terpineol.
