Spectrum Alternative School is an alternative high school education in the west district of Mount Pleasant Toronto that was founded in 1978. Its original teachers include Ellen Dorfman, Brian Taylor, and David Clyne, all of whom are from the Senior School of Deer Park in a program called Spectrum. It was the first alternative school for seventh and eighth grade students. The school was proposed in 1978 but was strongly opposed by the Toronto Area 6. Inspector because of the intense parents' lobbying of the TDSB school was subsequently made.

Its original ethos was inspired by schools like the Summerhill school and taught democratically. The program focuses on highly motivated students who want to work independently.

Early school goals include:

Small group instructions

-Setting and evaluation of individual goals

- Guest speakers, field trips, and community projects

- Art, music, and art exhibitions

Parliament -Mock and simulation

-literary and art magazines

- Community Fundraising

Initially sharing the building with Eglinton PS the school moved to Davisville Public School at 43 Millwood Rd, Toronto in 2011, and therefore the school was directed by the same principal. The current status of alternatives mostly arises from the small, familiar class sizes, represented by about 30 students per two classes. Although Alternative Spectrum is a public school within TDSB, prospective students must undergo the application process to be accepted.

Four teachers provide the curriculum, while encouraging close relationships among students, and between students and teachers. Subjects are delivered in large time blocks. Independent studies, special projects and direct learning form many curricula. Over the last few years schools have adopted the focus of art.
