Microsoft Publisher is an entry-level desktop publishing app from Microsoft, different from Microsoft Word because the emphasis is placed on the page layout and design rather than text composition and checking.

Overview
Publishers are included in higher editions of Microsoft Office, which reflects Microsoft's emphasis on apps as an easy-to-use and cheaper alternative to "heavyweights" focusing on small business markets, where companies lack the professional design dedication available to make marketing materials and other documents. However, it has a relatively small desktop publishing market share, dominated by Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress.
In Microsoft Office 2007, while most Microsoft Office applications use ribbons in their user interface, Publisher maintains its toolbar and does not adopt the ribbon until the next version, Microsoft Office 2010.

Compatibility
LibreOffice has supported Publisher's proprietary file format (.pub) since February 2013. Corel Draw X4 displays read-only support. Adobe PageMaker also saves files with the.pub extension, but both files are incompatible and unrelated. The publisher supports many other file formats, including the Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format, which is supported on the Windows platform. The trial version of Microsoft Publisher can be used to view.pub files after a trial period.
