The Smart Home Guide: How to Work With the Smart Home IFTTT Platform

If It's Then , also known as IFTTT ( ), is a free web-based service to create a simple conditional statement chain, called applet .

An applet is triggered by changes that occur in other web services such as Gmail, Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, or Pinterest.

For example, an applet can send e-mail messages if a user tweets using hashtags, or copy photos on Facebook to a user's archive if someone tags a user in a photo.

In addition to web-based apps, this service runs on iOS and Android. In February 2015, IFTTT renamed their original app to IF, and released a new suite of apps named Do that allows users to create apps and shortcuts. By 2015, IFTTT users make around 20 million recipes daily. All functions of the Do application package have been integrated into the redesigned IFTTT application.

IFTTT is initialism for If This Then That.

History

On December 14, 2010, Linden Tibbets, co-founder of IFTTT, posted a blog post titled "ifttt the beginning..." on the IFTTT website, announcing a new project. The first IFTTT application was designed and developed by Tibbets and co-founder Jesse Tane. On September 7, 2011, Tibbets announced the launch on its official website.

As of April 30, 2012, the user has made a million tasks. In June 2012, the service enters the Internet of Things space by integrating Belkin WeMo devices, allowing recipes to interact with the physical world. On July 10, 2013, IFTTT released the iPhone app and later released a version for iPad and iPod touch. On April 24, 2014, IFTTT released a version for Android. By the end of 2014, IFTTT's business is valued at approximately USD 170 million.

On February 19, 2015, IFTTT launched three new apps. Do Button triggers action when you press it. Do Camera automatically uploads images to the service of your choice (Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, etc.). Do Notes does the same thing as Do Camera, except with notes, not images. Starting November 2016, all four apps have been merged into one. In December 2016, the company announced a partnership with JotForm to integrate "Applets" to create actions in other applications.

Features

Overview

IFTTT uses the following concepts:

  • Services (formerly known as channels) are basic IFTTT building blocks. They mainly describe a series of data from certain web services like YouTube or eBay. The service can also describe actions that are controlled with certain APIs, such as SMS. Sometimes, they can represent information in terms of weather or stock. Each service has a specific set of triggers and actions.
  • Trigger is the "this" part of the applet. They are the items that trigger the action. For example, from an RSS feed, you may receive notifications based on keywords or phrases.
  • Action is the "that" part of an applet. They are outputs generated from trigger inputs.
  • Applet (formerly known as a recipe) is a predicate created from Triggers and Actions. For example, if you like images in Instagram (trigger), IFTTT apps can send photos to your Dropbox account (action).
  • Materials are the basic data available from the trigger - from an email trigger, for example; subject, body, attachment, date of receipt, and address of the sender.

Usage examples

  • IFTTT can automate web application tasks, such as posting the same content across multiple social networks.
  • Marketing professionals can use IFTTT to track company designations in RSS feeds.
  • IFTTT is also used in many cases of home automation use, eg turning on the lights when detecting movement in the room (with the appropriate device).
