HE (sometimes styled as H.I.M. ) is a Finnish gothic rock band from Helsinki, Finland. Formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo and bassist Mikko "Mige" Paananen under the name His Infernal Majesty , the band broke up in 1993, before being reformed in 1995 by Valo and guitarist Mikko "Linde" LindstrÃÆ'Â dengan m. Valo was originally meant to remain a bassist for the band, but took on the role of vocalist because of the need after they could not find the right singer. Soon after, Mige rejoined the band, which was finally rounded up by Juhana's drummer "PÃÆ'¤tkÃÆ'¤" Rantala. His Infernal Majesty played their first show on December 19, 1995 at Teatro in Helsinki, opening for Kauko RÃÆ'¶yhkÃÆ'¤. The band's next show is also in Teatro, this time featuring a Type O Negative cover, where they recruit Janne "Burton" Puurtinen to play the keyboard.
The band continued to record multiple demos, sending them to Nuclear Blast, Roadrunner and Spinefarm Records amongst others, all of which were inherited at the band's signing. Eventually the band was signed to BMG by Asko Kallonen's production manager, after he heard the cover of Chris Isaak's "Grim Game". In 1996, the band, now called HIM, recorded the EP 666 Ways to Love: Prolog in five days, produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa, with Valo on vocals, Mige on bass, Linde on guitar, PÃÆ'¤ tkÃÆ'Â ¤ on drums, and Oskari guitarist "Oki" KymÃÆ'¤lÃÆ'¤inen, who was excluded from the band before the EP release. Released in October 1996, the EP debuted at number sixteen on the Finnish Singles Chart, and peaked at number nine five weeks later. The music video, the first band, was also shot for "Wicked Game". The band played a special album launch event at the Tavastia Club on October 19, 1996, before starting the tour, where the band recruited keyboardist Antto Melasniemi.
Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 and Razorblade Romance (1997-2000)
HIM spent the summer of 1997 recording their debut album with Hiilesmaa as a producer. The band had minimal studio experience, and Valo then praised Hiilesmaa for helping "build his voice", calling it a respectable sixth member of the band. Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 was released in Finland on 3 November 1997 and internationally a year later. The album charted in Finland and Germany, peaking at number four in the former. Single "When Love and Death Embrace" and "Your Sweet 666" also broke the top ten in the band's home country. Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 received positive reviews from critics, with AllMusic describing this album as having a "very diverse voice" and ultimately succeeded "in satisfying everyone, whether they liked rock or pop." Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 will eventually go gold and then platinum in Finland. He also won "Newcomers of the Year" and "Debut Album of the Year" at the Finland Emma Awards in 1997. Official support tour for Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 began in mid-December 1997 at Maxim in Kuopio.
Before his first international tour, keyboardist Antto Melasniemi was replaced by Jussi-Mikko "Juska" Salminen. After returning to Finland, he fired PÃÆ'¤tkÃÆ'¤ and replaced it with Karppinen's Mika "Gas Lipstick". In January 1999, HIM began demonstrating material for their follow-up to Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 , again with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa. This session proved unsuccessful, and the band moved to Rockfield, Wales with producer John Fryer to start recording their second album. In November 1999, HIM released the single "Join Me in Death", which peaked at number one in Finland and Germany. "Join Me in Death" will eventually go platinum in Finland and gold in Germany and Austria. He was awarded "Exports of the Year" at the 1999 Emma Awards, and on December 31, 1999, the band played at the Tavastia Club in Helsinki, Finland, which turned into a New Year's tradition for the band.
The band's second album, Razorblade Romance , was released on January 24, 2000, peaking at number one in Finland, Austria and Germany. The album eventually won double platinum in Finland, three gold in Germany, and gold in Austria. Four more singles were released, all of which reached the top five on the Finnish Single Chart. Razorblade Romance is largely well received by critics; Soundi gave the album four out of five stars, and Blabbermouth.net called it "another remarkable album from Europe's best secret." Allmusic mixed in their reviews, calling the album too much produced, but still praising the songwriting. Nevertheless, HE was awarded "Band of the Year", and "Album of the Year" for Razorblade Romance, at the Emma Awards 2000, and "Choice Choice Award", and "Video of the Year" for "Join" with Me in Death ", at the 2000 VIVA Comet Awards. During the supporting tour for Razorblade Romance, DIA played their first show in the UK, starting at The Garage in London. Over time, the tour cycle and promotional work for the band's album runs out, to the point where Valo almost jumps from the hotel balcony, before being pulled back by a friend, while Salminen ends up in the emergency room after a false joke. He almost broke up at the end of the tour, but the band finally started practicing for another album.
Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights and < i> Love Metal (2001-2004)
In the fall of 2000, HIM began demonstrating material for their third album with producer T.T. Oksala. The band originally wanted to release this recording as a new album, but after resistance from BMG, producer Kevin Shirley was brought in to produce some upcoming albums. Around this time keyboardist Juska Salminen was replaced by Janne "Burton" Puurtinen. The recording process for the band's third album takes about eleven months, with Valo citing outside influences in the industry and an extended time frame having too much effect on the material. He explains: "When we started recording the third album, we became stoner rock and Black Sabbath [...] In the end we got into Neil Young and it showed on the recording." Despite this problem, his third album HIM Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights was released on August 24, 2001, and peaked at number one in Finland and Austria, and at number two in Germany and Switzerland, will then be platinum in Finland and gold in Austria. The supporting tour for Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlight almost resulted in the band breaking up once again, but also seeing DIA play the United States for the first time; a show hosted by professional skateboarders and television personality Bam Margera, who will continue to work with the band extensively, promoting them and directing some of their music videos. After a two-month break in early 2002, HIM rejoined and began practicing material for another album. Valo then credited a tour for Deep Shadow and Brilliant Highlights bringing the band closer, culminating in their fourth album, titled Love Metal. The album saw HE once again working with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa, and was seen by the band in reaction to the difficulties they faced during Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights. Love Metal was released on April 11, 2003, and reached the top five in four countries, peaking at number one in Finland and Germany. Dark Light and Venus Doom (2005-2008)

In September 2005, HIM embarked on a European club tour to prepare for the release of their upcoming album, while North American foot followed in October. On September 26, 2005, HIM released their fifth studio album Dark Light , which became the group's most successful album to date, being platinum in Finland, and gold in Germany, Britain and the United States. The album is mapped in sixteen countries, including in the top ten in Finland, Greece, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Four singles were released, with "Wings of a Butterfly" peaking at number one in Finland and "Killing Loneliness" at number two.
Dark Light received most of the positive reviews from critics. The New York Times describes the material as "stronger than ever" and Q Magazine calls this album "a collection of unbearable pop-rock songs". NME but call it "wimpy", while AllMusic describes it as "glossy and user-friendly". Nevertheless, Dark Light was named "Rock of the Year" album at the 2005 Emma Awards, with "Wings of a Butterfly" also receiving the award for "Song of the Year". In December 2005, DIA expanded their annual New Year's Eve event into a three-day festival, and named it Helldone, after their booking agency Tiina Welldone and the city of Helsinki. In January 2006, HIM was forced to postpone UK and Ireland tours, after Linde LindstrÃÆ' fractm broke his wrist bone following Helldone. The following March, DIA embarked on their first Australian tour. The band also toured in New Zealand and Japan for the first time in 2006. In September 2006, HIM canceled the upcoming North American tour, to begin work on the new album. In November 2006, DIA released Uneasy Listening Vol. 1 , a collection featuring alternative versions of previously released material. The album peaked at number seven in Finland, while the double singles "In Joy and Sorrow/Pretending" reached number one.
In February 2007, DIA began recording their sixth album at Finnvox Studios, reunited with producers Hiili Hiilesmaa and Tim Palmer. The creation of this album was overwhelmed by the problems facing Ville Valo in his personal life. Among other things, alcohol abuse of Valo worsens, with her reportedly vomiting and defecating at one point. These problems came to a head when Valo suffered a nervous breakdown during the recording process. According to Valo, he managed to recover, until the mixing stage, when he started drinking again. Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice and Tears in Tape (2009-2014)
In 2009, HIM started working on their seventh studio album with producer Matt Squire. Titled Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice , this album is the first band that Ville Valo is doing fully improvised, resulting in more practice groups than ever before. Released on February 8, 2010, Screamworks is mapped in ten countries, breaking the top ten in Finland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was scheduled to start their North American tour to support Tears on Tape on May 3, 2013, but the tour was canceled after Ville Valo suffered a severe asthma attack and was diagnosed with alleged pneumonia. Past year and dissolution (2015-2017)
In January 2015, Lipstick Gas announced its departure from HIM, after 16 years with the band. In his announcement, Gas stated that "no drama, bad blood or any negativity involved in my departure I just felt it was time for me to move on as a musician." In July 2015, HIM made their live debut following Gas's departure, with Jukka drummer "Kosmo" KrÃÆ'¶ger on a surprise show at Qstock in Oulu, Finland. On December 5, 2015, HE appeared in Knotfest in Toluca, Mexico, with Slipknot, Megadeth, and Lamb of God, among others. He rested in 2016, during which time LindstrÃÆ'¶m, Mige and Burton reunited as Daniel Lioneye, while Valo released his first solo single and made several guest appearances on other artist releases. According to Valo, 2007 Venus Doom was written with the intention of creating a much heavier and darker followup, influenced by more early favorites like My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost. Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice took influence from 1980s bands, such as a-ha, Depeche Mode and The Cult, while Tears on Tape sees it coming back to roots, combining elements of their sound on each song, as opposed to having a "fast track followed by a slow song". Valo describes the Teardrop on Tape as a combination of Black Sabbath, The Smashing Pumpkins and Roy Orbison.

The central part of HIM's image has become a heartagram. Heartagram is a trademark symbol of the band, created by vocalist Ville Valo on his twentieth birthday in 1996. The heart and pentagram combination, the heartagram is meant to represent the juxtaposition of "the soft and hard, the men and women, the yin and yang "according to Valo. Musically the heart is also meant to represent the soft side of the band, while the pentagram symbolizes their heavier influence. This alignment is also prevalent in the band's album title. In the early days of the band, his image was greatly marked by the occult and the image of the devil. The use of the number "666" is particularly prominent in the lyrics, as well as the title of the song and album, while the band's original name "His Infernal Majesty" was inspired by The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, the song "No Care for Crime" by Deicide, and Haile Selassie, known as the "greatness of his empire". On the band's first three albums, vocalist Ville Valo only appeared on the cover. DIA is one of the most commercially successful commercial bands of all time, with sales of over ten million albums worldwide. The band also holds the distinction as the first Finnish group to receive gold records in the United States. HE is one of the first Finnish bands to achieve major international success. Much of HIM's success has been attributed to vocalist and main songwriter Ville Valo. Vesterinen chose the ability to write the song Valo as a major component in HIM's success, stating: "Charisma in something you are born with [...] writing songs on the other hand is hard to learn, if you do not have the talent for it." Juhani Merimaa also stated that with "melodic, interesting and good songs", as well as "credible underground, and mainstream", it has "all elements to break through". We have the pleasure and the honor to produce songs that suit the hearts of the people. That's the wonder of rock 'n' roll. I have not the slightest clue as to why the band is generating such interest. You can not get it with money. It's magical.
Heartagram has also been a key factor in HIM's success, with Valo acknowledging the symbol that transcends the band, stating that "there are many people who have them [tattoos] who do not really know what it is, do not connect it to the band, and in that sense, I consider it as my greatest achievement. "Valo also gave credit to Bam Margera and Kat Von D for supporting him and giving the band exposure through their own work. Margera has included a lot of band and heartagram music in her movies and TV shows, while the heartagram is clearly displayed on Von D's own show LA Ink. Margera was first introduced to HIM in May 2000, when he flew to Finland for the skateboard competition and watched the band's music video on TV. He then went to the record store and bought the Razorblade Romance album. Regarding Margera's involvement in HIM's success, Valo stated: "It was not about the secret handshake between managers, he was just a random person who came knocking on our door [...] and so the friendship started."
