Histori

Awal tahun (1991-1996)

HIM's first incarnation was formed in 1991 by childhood friends Ville Valo and Mikko "Mige" Paananen in Helsinki, Finland. Valo plays a six-string bass, which replaces the guitar, while Mige also plays the bass, with drummer spinning Sami "Juippi" Jokilehto and Juha Tarvonen rounding off the starting line-up. Dubbed His Infernal Majesty , other names considered for the band include Black Earth, Black Salem and Kafferi. The band recorded demos of Witches and Other Night Fears, and played their first and only performances on New Year's Eve 1992 in the Semifinals in Helsinki, before breaking up when Mige started his national military service in 1993. 1995, His Infernal Majesty was reformed by Valo and guitarist Mikko "Linde" LindstrÃÆ'¶m, and together they recorded a demo of four songs, in which Valo played drums and sang, while Linde handled the guitar and bass. Valo was originally meant to remain a bassist for the band, but took on the role of vocalist because of the need after they could not find the right singer. Soon after, Mige rejoined the band, which was finally rounded up by Juhana's drummer "PÃÆ'¤tkÃÆ'¤" Rantala. His Infernal Majesty played their first show on December 19, 1995 at Teatro in Helsinki, opening for Kauko RÃÆ'¶yhkÃÆ'¤. The band's next show is also in Teatro, this time featuring a Type O Negative cover, where they recruit Janne "Burton" Puurtinen to play the keyboard.

The band continued to record multiple demos, sending them to Nuclear Blast, Roadrunner and Spinefarm Records amongst others, all of which were inherited at the band's signing. Eventually the band was signed to BMG by Asko Kallonen's production manager, after he heard the cover of Chris Isaak's "Grim Game". In 1996, the band, now called HIM, recorded the EP 666 Ways to Love: Prolog in five days, produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa, with Valo on vocals, Mige on bass, Linde on guitar, PÃÆ'¤ tkÃÆ'Â ¤ on drums, and Oskari guitarist "Oki" KymÃÆ'¤lÃÆ'¤inen, who was excluded from the band before the EP release. Released in October 1996, the EP debuted at number sixteen on the Finnish Singles Chart, and peaked at number nine five weeks later. The music video, the first band, was also shot for "Wicked Game". The band played a special album launch event at the Tavastia Club on October 19, 1996, before starting the tour, where the band recruited keyboardist Antto Melasniemi.

Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 and Razorblade Romance (1997-2000)

HIM spent the summer of 1997 recording their debut album with Hiilesmaa as a producer. The band had minimal studio experience, and Valo then praised Hiilesmaa for helping "build his voice", calling it a respectable sixth member of the band. Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 was released in Finland on 3 November 1997 and internationally a year later. The album charted in Finland and Germany, peaking at number four in the former. Single "When Love and Death Embrace" and "Your Sweet 666" also broke the top ten in the band's home country. Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 received positive reviews from critics, with AllMusic describing this album as having a "very diverse voice" and ultimately succeeded "in satisfying everyone, whether they liked rock or pop." Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 will eventually go gold and then platinum in Finland. He also won "Newcomers of the Year" and "Debut Album of the Year" at the Finland Emma Awards in 1997. Official support tour for Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 began in mid-December 1997 at Maxim in Kuopio.

Before his first international tour, keyboardist Antto Melasniemi was replaced by Jussi-Mikko "Juska" Salminen. After returning to Finland, he fired PÃÆ'¤tkÃÆ'¤ and replaced it with Karppinen's Mika "Gas Lipstick". In January 1999, HIM began demonstrating material for their follow-up to Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 , again with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa. This session proved unsuccessful, and the band moved to Rockfield, Wales with producer John Fryer to start recording their second album. In November 1999, HIM released the single "Join Me in Death", which peaked at number one in Finland and Germany. "Join Me in Death" will eventually go platinum in Finland and gold in Germany and Austria. He was awarded "Exports of the Year" at the 1999 Emma Awards, and on December 31, 1999, the band played at the Tavastia Club in Helsinki, Finland, which turned into a New Year's tradition for the band.

The band's second album, Razorblade Romance , was released on January 24, 2000, peaking at number one in Finland, Austria and Germany. The album eventually won double platinum in Finland, three gold in Germany, and gold in Austria. Four more singles were released, all of which reached the top five on the Finnish Single Chart. Razorblade Romance is largely well received by critics; Soundi gave the album four out of five stars, and Blabbermouth.net called it "another remarkable album from Europe's best secret." Allmusic mixed in their reviews, calling the album too much produced, but still praising the songwriting. Nevertheless, HE was awarded "Band of the Year", and "Album of the Year" for Razorblade Romance, at the Emma Awards 2000, and "Choice Choice Award", and "Video of the Year" for "Join" with Me in Death ", at the 2000 VIVA Comet Awards. During the supporting tour for Razorblade Romance, DIA played their first show in the UK, starting at The Garage in London. Over time, the tour cycle and promotional work for the band's album runs out, to the point where Valo almost jumps from the hotel balcony, before being pulled back by a friend, while Salminen ends up in the emergency room after a false joke. He almost broke up at the end of the tour, but the band finally started practicing for another album.

Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights and < i> Love Metal (2001-2004)

In the fall of 2000, HIM began demonstrating material for their third album with producer T.T. Oksala. The band originally wanted to release this recording as a new album, but after resistance from BMG, producer Kevin Shirley was brought in to produce some upcoming albums. Around this time keyboardist Juska Salminen was replaced by Janne "Burton" Puurtinen. The recording process for the band's third album takes about eleven months, with Valo citing outside influences in the industry and an extended time frame having too much effect on the material. He explains: "When we started recording the third album, we became stoner rock and Black Sabbath [...] In the end we got into Neil Young and it showed on the recording." Despite this problem, his third album HIM Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights was released on August 24, 2001, and peaked at number one in Finland and Austria, and at number two in Germany and Switzerland, will then be platinum in Finland and gold in Austria. Three singles were released from the album, all of which reached the top five in Finland.

Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlight received mixed reviews, with Allmusic calling it "too clean" and "really boring". Soundi echoes this, saying that the album is "ideal music for girls, who do not dig music, but the appearance of Ville Valo and its decadent lyrical image." Blabbermouth.net is more positive in their review, stating that "in pure artistic and commercial terms [...] HE has made a logical follow-up album for one of the spotlights last year, and they continue to reinforce their reputation as one of the most stones unique and consistent act. "HE was once again named" Exports of the Year "at the Emma Awards 2001, and received a" Choice Choice Award "at the VIVA Comet Awards that same year. In 2002, HIM was involved in a rights dispute in the United States, because the name "HIM" was already owned by a drummer from the Chicago jazz fusion band of the same name. HIM changed its name to HER in the US, until a settlement was finally reached between the two parties, allowing both to keep HER's name. On October 7, 2002, HIM released The Single Collection , a set containing all single bands, as well as previously unreleased singles from "It's All Tears". Also in October 2002, Synnin viemÃÆ'¤ÃÆ'¤ , the band's official biography, written by J. K. Juntunen, was released.

The supporting tour for Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlight almost resulted in the band breaking up once again, but also seeing DIA play the United States for the first time; a show hosted by professional skateboarders and television personality Bam Margera, who will continue to work with the band extensively, promoting them and directing some of their music videos. After a two-month break in early 2002, HIM rejoined and began practicing material for another album. Valo then credited a tour for Deep Shadow and Brilliant Highlights bringing the band closer, culminating in their fourth album, titled Love Metal. The album saw HE once again working with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa, and was seen by the band in reaction to the difficulties they faced during Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights. According to Valo: "After what we consider disappointing with Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlight, because there are so many cooks in the kitchen, we want to be a [...] band that we control what we do, and people others can go. " Love Metal is also the band's first album to make a prominent use of the band's logo, heartagram, on its cover, which Valo calls" musical, visual and ideological [...]. "

Love Metal was released on April 11, 2003, and reached the top five in four countries, peaking at number one in Finland and Germany. It also became the band's first album to chart in the UK, at number 55. Love Metal went platinum in Finland and gold in Germany, and three singles were released, with "The Funeral of Hearts" peaking at number one on Finland. "The Funeral of Hearts" was later awarded the "Best Videos" in 2004 Kerrang! Awards . Love Metal is well received by critics, with Soundi giving it three out of five stars, while Allmusic states that "songwriting is as strong as long time and a new sense of urgency, making notes run at speed the good one. "

After the release of the album, DIA started their first tour in the US, which was all sold out. In August 2003, it was announced that HIM had split with BMG, having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the label. He also plans to release a live album, while titled Live Metal , in November 2003, but the record was eventually removed in favor of starting work on the new material. In March 2004, HIM released and Love Said No: The Greatest Hits 1997-2004 , which reached number two in Finland and number five in Germany, then gold in the former. In addition to previously released material, this collection also includes two new songs; "And Love Said No", and the cover of Neil Diamond "Solitary Man". The latter peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart and number two in Finland, while "And Love Said No" took the top spot on the Finnish Single Chart. In September 2004, HIM announced that it had signed a new recording deal worldwide with Sire Records. While Sire will handle releases in Europe, the US, Japan and Australia, in Finland HIM's future recordings will be released through the band's own Heartagram label. Among other things, alcohol abuse of Valo worsens, with her reportedly vomiting and defecating at one point. These problems came to a head when Valo suffered a nervous breakdown during the recording process. According to Valo, he managed to recover, until the mixing stage, when he started drinking again. Music style

As the lead songwriter for HIM, Ville Valo's vocalist is mostly related to the theme of love. When discussing the process of writing his song, Valo explains: "I do not know how to cope with the world, then I find a musical instrument, and through it I realize that I am able to overcome the world and its evil, a little better, through writing songs." lyrics, Valo has stated that "I feel like there's no more important subject for a song than a relationship, it's the only thing that moves me." Valo also takes inspiration from literature, but only certain aspects of it, explains: "As a man who writes songs, I feel happy with ideas, or books, or sentences I'm not too interested in Tolkien's overall, I'm just happy with Uruk-hai, just a few details that make my mind work too fast. "The lyrics of Valo have been described as" flowing with blood-stained hearts and gothic melodrama. "

Critics call HIM's music as gothic rock, gothic metal, alternative rock, alternative metal, and dark rock. The band itself has referred to their music as "love metal", the title of their fourth studio album. According to Ville Valo, the term "love metal" was created in response to people who have difficulty categorizing their music. In relation to the DIA labeled "goth band", Valo responded by stating: "We can not do anything about it [label], but I think we are a special color of goth, softer than others. In Finnish tradition, music we are very melancholy. "Valo described HIM's voice as" sentimental rock music, hard-hitting ". According to Valo, since the beginning of the band's intention was to combine more melodic and melancholic elements, with a more severe influence. Valo often mentions Black Sabbath and Type O Negative as the greatest influence of HIM. Some further band influences include Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Electric Wizard, Magnet Monster, and Norwegian black metal. Regarding the sound of HIM, Valo also stated that: "We never try to claim that we have rediscovered the rock 'n' roll wheel We are always proud to be the torchbearers for Sabbath, Type O, Paradise Lost and Anathema, the band. "Helsingin Sanomat describes the band's music as achieving a" major crossover attraction "by combining" traditional Finnish melancholia ", with" gothic lyrics, metal guitar walls, and keyboard riffs. "

In their debut album, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 , his voice was seen as a combination of heavy metal music and rock and goth music of the 1980s. This influence is further explored on Razorblade Romance, which features less focus on the guitar, supporting a leaner production and a more melodic sound. He continues to explore more commercial sounds on their third album Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, which met with mixed reactions. Her fourth album Love Metal was widely seen by the band as an album where they found their own voices, taking inspiration from old favorites, such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Iggy Pop. Dark Light is the band's groundbreaking album in the United States, and again featuring glosser production. According to Valo, 2007 Venus Doom was written with the intention of creating a much heavier and darker followup, influenced by more early favorites like My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost. Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice took influence from 1980s bands, such as a-ha, Depeche Mode and The Cult, while Tears on Tape sees it coming back to roots, combining elements of their sound on each song, as opposed to having a "fast track followed by a slow song". Valo describes the Teardrop on Tape as a combination of Black Sabbath, The Smashing Pumpkins and Roy Orbison.

Images

The central part of HIM's image has become a heartagram. Heartagram is a trademark symbol of the band, created by vocalist Ville Valo on his twentieth birthday in 1996. The heart and pentagram combination, the heartagram is meant to represent the juxtaposition of "the soft and hard, the men and women, the yin and yang "according to Valo. Musically the heart is also meant to represent the soft side of the band, while the pentagram symbolizes their heavier influence. This alignment is also prevalent in the band's album title. On their first album, HE used the heart with "666" in it as their logo, which later Valo felt "a bit boring". Heartagram was first used on the album cover of HIM 2003 Love Metal , and has since appeared in many releases from the band. Valo later stated that the heartagram "is probably the best thing I've ever been", and it's "worth more than money" and "bigger than our band". Heartagram has also made several appearances on TV, including Charmed , LA Ink , Viva La Bam , and Criminal Minds .

In the early days of the band, his image was greatly marked by the occult and the image of the devil. The use of the number "666" is particularly prominent in the lyrics, as well as the title of the song and album, while the band's original name "His Infernal Majesty" was inspired by The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, the song "No Care for Crime" by Deicide, and Haile Selassie, known as the "greatness of his empire". This temptation with the occult is seen by the band as pure "symbolic" and "traditional rock 'n' roll". Ville Valo first became interested in the subject while at school and immediately began reading books about the occult. All bands are also big fans of black metal. HE has maintained that none of them are seriously interested in Satanism, that it is "more about attraction", while respecting "masters", with "our tongues on the cheek about it". His Infernal Majesty finally shortened their name to him in 1996, because the Finns were having trouble remembering and saying "His Infernal Majesty". Since then, HE has refined the use of Satan's image, and when asked about the band's image in 2013, Valo replies that "I think we're pretty much [off-stage].) The only difference is I do not necessarily wear eyeliner every day."

On the band's first three albums, vocalist Ville Valo only appeared on the cover. According to Valo, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 was intended as a combination of goth and eroticism, while Razorblade Romance was influenced by the 1980s, as well as glam and pop music, and Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights inspiration from Lou Reed, Patti Smith, and the late 1970s of New York City art. Love Metal is the first album that prominently features a heartagram on its cover, which is repeated on Dark Light follow-up. For the cover of Venus Doom, the band used a painting by David Harouni, which Valo bought during a tour of New Orleans. Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice takes the picture of a nineteenth-century nun statue that Valo bought in Bavaria. At Tape of Tapes, He uses several paintings by Daniel P. Carter for art, as well as variations of the heartagram on the cover, as well as by Carter. The artwork also utilizes the malachim alphabet.

Legacy

DIA is one of the most commercially successful commercial bands of all time, with sales of over ten million albums worldwide. The band also holds the distinction as the first Finnish group to receive gold records in the United States. HE is one of the first Finnish bands to achieve major international success. Band manager Seppo Vesterinen recalls that before he "the success of Finnish bands [..] was limited to a fairly small circle, it was not a global phenomenon." Juhani Merimaa, owner of the Tavastia Club, also calls itself a "pioneer", opens the door for other Finnish bands such as Children of Bodom and Sonata Arctica to gain international recognition. In September 2015, DIA was one of six Finnish bands honored by the Finnish postal service by being featured on a new line of postage stamps designed by Klaus Welp. In 2017, Loudwire included HER on the list of ten best Finnish metal bands.

Much of HIM's success has been attributed to vocalist and main songwriter Ville Valo. Vesterinen chose the ability to write the song Valo as a major component in HIM's success, stating: "Charisma in something you are born with [...] writing songs on the other hand is hard to learn, if you do not have the talent for it." Juhani Merimaa also stated that with "melodic, interesting and good songs", as well as "credible underground, and mainstream", it has "all elements to break through". He also gained a lot of fans through the image of Valo, who is Helsingin Sanomat described as utilizing "a proven and correct James Dean formula, in which sensitivity and mixing are combined." In 2004, Metal Hammer describes Valo as one of several new "rockstar" in music, stating: "HE is not like any other band They have something special, but more importantly they have someone who special. "Ville shines like a star with a mixture of Mick Jagger's attitude and the dark charm of Brandon Lee at The Crow. Loudwire rated Valo as the fourteenth largest metal figurehead of the 21st century, stating: "Her baritone voice is undeniably beautiful, her vampire charisma almost hypnotic, male fans desperately trying to emulate her and female fans are screaming ballistic as if he were the second coming of Elvis. "

He also attracted male and female fans, with Asko Kallonen, who first signed the band to BMG, recalling: "For example in England it is difficult to understand where it is usually clear: hard rock is for men, pop is for girls He is heard by both. "Juhani Merimaa also feels the same, stating:" Unlike other metal bands, they appeal to the opposite sex. " PopMatters has noted that HE is "not the kind of action that generates a lukewarm response [as] a good person like them or discredits them directly". Some of the main criticisms are directed at bands centered around their "formulative" musical properties and "pandering" against teenage goth fans. His relationship with the Jackass and skateboarder Bam Margera has also received some negative feedback.

During the band's farewell tour, Valo was asked about HIM's relationship with their audience, to which he replied:

We have the pleasure and the honor to produce songs that suit the hearts of the people. That's the wonder of rock 'n' roll. I have not the slightest clue as to why the band is generating such interest. You can not get it with money. It's magical.

Heartagram has also been a key factor in HIM's success, with Valo acknowledging the symbol that transcends the band, stating that "there are many people who have them [tattoos] who do not really know what it is, do not connect it to the band, and in that sense, I consider it as my greatest achievement. "Valo also gave credit to Bam Margera and Kat Von D for supporting him and giving the band exposure through their own work. Margera has included a lot of band and heartagram music in her movies and TV shows, while the heartagram is clearly displayed on Von D's own show LA Ink. Margera was first introduced to HIM in May 2000, when he flew to Finland for the skateboard competition and watched the band's music video on TV. He then went to the record store and bought the Razorblade Romance album. Regarding Margera's involvement in HIM's success, Valo stated: "It was not about the secret handshake between managers, he was just a random person who came knocking on our door [...] and so the friendship started."
