History
ACE was established with seed money from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the Center for Economic Education Policy (EEPC) and started its first class for the youth at risk on September 16, 1991. Using the non-traditional approach to education, ACE is the result of a collaboration of a design team consisting of from educators and community representatives.
The design team envisions a campus where young people at risk of age 16-21 will have an entirely different environment to study and where instructors will use innovative teaching models and teaching strategies. This creative approach will improve student achievement by changing the way in which students are taught.
Currently, the project is funded by local funds, substitute education funds, career and technology funds, special education support, and community resources. Through strong leadership, former dropouts are empowered to become problem solvers, thinkers, and future leaders.

Curriculum
The Northeast Independent School District Policy and the Texas Education Code require students to participate actively in a balanced curriculum designed to meet individual needs. The purpose of the Academy curriculum is to prepare knowledgeable, wise, and active citizens who understand the importance of patriotism and can function productively in a free corporate society with an appreciation for our country's basic democratic values ââand our national heritage.
The driving force behind the Academy's non-traditional program is the curriculum, where Academy educators continue to use research-based information to determine what teenagers need to learn at risk. The curriculum is designed by fast-paced, accelerated, and individual faculty. It provides students with academic options that promote critical thinking skills and problem-solving techniques applicable to real-life experiences. A challenging and motivating activity is incorporated to integrate core subjects within and across the curriculum. Interdisciplinary concepts are incorporated throughout the curriculum to emphasize on the assessment of Texas Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) goals. To ensure that all students are successful learners, Academy educators have centered the integrated and in-depth curriculum around student learning styles. The curriculum is based on an innovative approach that is uniquely suited to meet students' needs, abilities, interests, and backgrounds. The curriculum features performance-based activities while discussing how each student is learning well. All students are treated as if they are talented and expected to achieve 80% mastery on all tasks.
